Spotify Puts Women in the Spotlight
With the EQUAL program, Spotify features a female pioneer every month, both on the platform and beyond. Experience has shown that this attention leads to an increase in streams. The EQUAL artist for March is the torch singer Sophie Straat, who is also the co-curator of the Dutch EQUAL playlist this month, adding artists like Amyl and The Sniffers, Sinéad O’Connor, Naaz, Little Sims & Lizzo. Additionally, Sophie is featured on a billboard in Times Square, following in the footsteps of artists like Maan, Froukje, and Meau. Specifically for International Women’s Day, Spotify curated “Women of Music,” a playlist filled with great music produced by women.
The Largest Art Prize for Female Artists
The Theodora Niemeijer Prize, the largest art prize in the Netherlands for female artists, will be awarded tonight. Introduced in 2012 by the Niemeijer Fund, the incentive award addresses the underrepresentation of contemporary female artists in exhibitions and museum collections. Through the prize, the fund seeks to increase the representation and appreciation of female artists. To underscore the importance of gender equality in the art world, this year’s prize amount has been increased to a substantial €100,000. The announcement of the winner is coming very soon!
STRAAT Museum and ABN AMRO Join Forces
The STRAAT Museum is currently hosting the exhibition “Women in Street Art” (until May 28). Despite the predominantly male scene, there are many influential female street artists. STRAAT and ABN AMRO aim to enhance the visibility of female role models in street art, showcasing them in the new exhibition. In addition to works by artists like Gleo, Judith de Leeuw, and Adele Renault, already featured at STRAAT, the exhibition now includes pieces by the internationally renowned Lady Aiko, Dutch graffiti icon Mick La Rock, and Nina Valkhoff.
