ABN AMRO and DGTL: Her Sound

A male top DJ earns on average €900,000 a year more than a female colleague. HAGENS handled the PR around the documentary Her Sound.

Dutch music exports are breaking records, with electronic music as the big earner. Yet behind that success lies a striking inequality: a male top DJ earns on average €900,000 a year more than a female colleague, according to an analysis by ABN AMRO. The first female artist in the list of shows abroad, KI/KI, only appears at number 27.

Among up-and-coming DJs, too, men are booked more often at every level. Fewer shows means less visibility and income, which leads female artists to quit early more often.

The documentary Her Sound shows those barriers and follows the change that has been set in motion, with stories from pioneers such as Charlotte de Witte and DJ Isis and new talent from the DGTL Academy. The crew behind the documentary is 75% women.

HAGENS handled the PR rollout and supported journalists and DJs around the premiere at DGTL. The outreach generated attention on NPO Radio 1 (De Rode Draad), BNR, De Telegraaf, MarketingReport and Sponsorreport, among others.
