Anyone who dreams of reaching the top in sport trains incredibly hard, travels the country and invests heavily in themselves. For athletes with a physical disability, that bar is even higher financially. Research by ABN AMRO, in collaboration with (former) top athletes and national coaches, shows that ambitious wheelchair athletes pay between €16,000 and €26,500 more a year to make the step to the top than athletes without a disability.
For the third year in a row, HAGENS was responsible for the full PR approach around the wheelchair tennis tournament of the ABN AMRO Open, the largest in the Netherlands. On behalf of ABN AMRO, we also developed the Sportbeurs (Sports Grant): a multi-year programme with financial support, knowledge and guidance from Esther Vergeer and Diede de Groot, among others.
The result: a report on the NOS Radio 1 Journaal, the opening item of the Jeugdjournaal, coverage in Het Financieele Dagblad and Esther Vergeer as a guest on Goedemorgen Nederland.
